1. Inschrijven

Inschrijfformulier

De inschrijfcriteria zijn ruim: alle soorten jazz en aanverwante (cross-over) stijlen zijn welkom! Er wordt met name beoordeeld op originaliteit, samenspel en verbeeldingskracht.
De belangrijkste aangepaste voorwaarden per 2022:

  1. Gemiddelde leeftijd van de band is maximaal 35 (!) jaar.
  2. Om de eigen identiteit van de deelnemende groepen te waarborgen, kunnen zich alleen groepen inschrijven die een unieke bezetting hebben.
  3. Een individuele musicus kan dus vanaf editie 2022 slechts onderdeel uitmaken van één inschrijvende band!

De inzending moet bestaan uit:

  • 2 stukken, waarvan minimaal 1 eigen compositie (via WeTransfer link met duidelijke vermelding van de band naam)
  • een digitale biografie (max. 1 A4)
  • een duidelijke digitale persfoto (liggend)
  • de line up van de band met de namen van de musici
  • de componisten van de ingezonden composities

Een deskundige jury (bestaande uit musici, programmeurs, journalisten etc.) beoordeelt de inzendingen blindfolded, dus uitsluitend op de ingezonden opnames en zonder te zijn geïnformeerd over de identiteit van de groepen en musici.
De jury selecteert 6 bands die zullen optreden tijdens de halve finale.

2. Halve finale

Tijdens de halve finale speelt elk van de geselecteerde groepen maximaal 15 minuten”. Het is verplicht om minimaal 1 eigen compositie te spelen. De halve finale jury selecteert 3 bands en het publiek kiest 1 formatie voor de finale.

3. Finale

Elke groep verzorgt een presentatie van 30 minuten, waarin minimaal 2 eigen composities zijn opgenomen. Een speciale finale jury selecteert de “Beste Groep” en ook wordt er een “Publieksprijs” uitgereikt.

4. Prijzenpakket

Naast erkenning en bruikbare ervaring strijden de finalisten van de Dutch Jazz Competition ook om een uitgebreid prijzenpakket. In samenwerking met diverse partners worden de volgende prijzen geboden:

  • Geldprijs (“Winnaars Publieksprijs en Winnaar Beste Band”) beschikbaar gesteld door Sena Muziekproductiefionds
  • Festival Tournee in de zomer volgens op de finale (Winnaar Beste Band)
  • Relevante optredens (Winnaar Publieksprijs)

5. Regelement/ Voorwaarden

De Dutch Jazz Competition wordt georganiseerd door Stichting Dutch Jazz Competition (hierna te noemen “de Stichting” ). Door het inschrijfformulier Dutch Jazz Competition te ondertekenen verklaart de inschrijver de vermelde verplichtingen te zullen nakomen en zich te houden aan de genoemde spelregels. Specifieke aanwijzingen m.b.t. halve finale en finales worden na de eerste selectie bekendgemaakt. Om de eigen identiteit van de deelnemende bands te waarborgen, kunnen zich alleen groepen inschrijven die een unieke bezetting hebben. Een individuele musicus kan dus slechts onderdeel uitmaken van één inschrijvende groep.     

  • De competitie staat open voor groepen (solisten) waarvan minstens de helft van het aantal leden in Nederland woonachtig is. Bij twijfel is het oordeel van de Stichting bindend.
  • Alleen groepen die de intentie en mogelijkheid hebben zich ‘live’ tijdens het vervolg van het concours te presenteren kunnen meedingen.
  • De groep/solist schrijft zich in voor deelname aan het evenement Dutch Jazz Competition door het inschrijfformulier Dutch Jazz Competition via het webformulier te sturen en via email (We Transfer) de 2 tracks, waarvan min. 1 eigen compositie en in totaal niet langer dan 12 min (zie punt 4), een duidelijke digitale foto (liggend) van de groep/solist en een digitale biografie (niet meer dan 1x A4) met o.m de namen van de groepsleden en van de componisten van de ingezonden stukken.
  • De componist verklaart en garandeert dat de ingezonden eigen compositie geen inbreuk maakt op het auteursrecht of ander recht van derden. De inschrijving is zonder 1 van deze onderdelen niet compleet, en wordt niet in de demoselectie meegenomen. De bezetting van de deelnemende groepen mag niet wijzigen in het traject van inschrijvingen, semi-finales en finale.
  • Het concours zal bestaan uit een selectieronde waarin een commissie (door de Stichting aan te wijzen) het ingezonden materiaal beoordeelt. Vervolgens worden de selecties van de 6 halve finalisten bekendgemaakt. Uit de halve finale (8 december TivoliVredenburg) worden maximaal 4 groepen gekozen voor de finale. De finale vindt plaats op 17 december in het Bimhuis Amsterdam. Selectie bij de halve finales en finale geschiedt eveneens door een door de Stichting aan te wijzen jury.
  • Het door de groep/act beschikbaar gestelde materiaal blijft eigendom van de Stichting en wordt niet teruggezonden. Het adres voor inschrijvingen is Dutch Jazz Competition, Emaus 73, 3135 JC Vlaardingen. Zie elders op deze site voor: de exacte inschrijfperiode
  • De Stichting raadt deelnemers aan hun composities te deponeren bij de vereniging Buma.
  • Maximaal 4 weken na afloop van de inschrijfperiode maakt de Stichting bekend welke groepen/solisten voor de semi-finales zijn geselecteerd. Over de jurygegevens alsmede de beslissingen van de demo-, semi-finale- en finale jury’s wordt niet gecorrespondeerd.
  • De Stichting heeft het recht het door de groep/solist toegezonden materiaal te gebruiken voor publicitaire doeleinden. De Stichting kan van de finale opnamen maken die gebruikt kunnen worden voor radio- en/of televisieuitzendingen en eventueel kunnen verschijnen op een geluids- en/of beelddrager. De Stichting verkrijgt hierbij het niet-exclusieve recht om naam, artiestennaam, logo, merk, portretten, afbeeldingen en/of biografische bijzonderheden van de groep/act te gebruiken op inlaycards, hoezen of andere verpakkingsmaterialen van evt. reprodukties en op materialen bestemd voor promotie- en publiciteitsdoeleinden die verband houden met de exploitatie van evt. reprodukties, zowel voor de finale als daarna.

6. Achtergrond

In 2000 is de Dutch Jazz Competition voor het eerst van start gegaan.
De Dutch Jazz Competition onderscheidt van andere jazzconcoursen op verschillende manieren:

  • De betrokkenheid van het ‘jazzveld’. De Dutch Jazz Competition is opgericht op verzoek van de spelers uit het veld waaronder musici, culturele instellingen, vakbonden, omroepen en podia.
  • De formule van open inschrijving, waardoor de DJC een breed scala aan jazz- en jazzcross-overstromingen presenteert uitgevoerd door startende professionals.
  • Bij selectie ontvangen alle deelnemers per muzikant per optreden de door vakbonden en auteursrechten organisaties gehanteerde gagenorm (€ 270). Maximaal is voor een per band 1620 euro (6 spelers) beschikbaar.
  • De aandacht van de landelijke media zo mogelijk via de media-partners Sublime FM/Dutch Jazz en NPO Radio 2 Soul & Jazz
  • De prijzen die de winnaars ten deel vallen. De combinatie van een geldprijs, tournees, participatie aan prestigieuze evenementen werkt als een katalysator voor de muzikale carrière van de winnaars.
  • Scouting. De pool van jazz(+)experts die als scout voor de DJC op zoek zijn naar onderscheidend talent.
  • Continuïteit. De competitie bestaat inmiddels sinds 2000.

7. Missie en hoofddoelstelling van de DJC

  • De muzikale carrière van jonge, meest talentvolle Nederlandse jazzmuzikanten, startende professionals, te stimuleren.
  • Een representatieve staalkaart van het nieuwe Nederlandse jazztalent aan een zo groot mogelijk publiek te presenteren.
  • Ondernemerschap bevorderen door de deelnemende groepen onder meer te betrekken in de promotie.

Registration Regulations
The registration criteria are broad: all kinds of jazz and related (cross-over) styles are welcome! Your band will be mainly judged on originality, interplay and imagination.
The most important adjusted conditions as of 2022:

  1. Average age of the band is a maximum of 35 (!) years.
  2. In order to guarantee the own identity of the participating groups, only groups with a unique occupation can register.
  3. An individual musician can therefore only be part of one registering band from the 2022 edition!

The submission must consist of:

  • 2 pieces, of which at least 1 own composition (via WeTransfer link with clear mention of the band name)
  • a digital biography (max. 1 A4)
  • a clear digital (landscape) press photo
  • the lineup of the band with the names of the musicians
  • the composers of the submitted compositions

An expert jury (consisting of musicians, programmers, journalists, etc.) judges the entries blindfolded, i.e. solely on the recorded recordings and without being informed about the identity of the groups and musicians.
The jury selects 6 bands that will perform during the semi-final.

2. SEMI-FINAL

During the semi-finals, each of the selected 6 groups will play for a maximum of 15 minutes. It is mandatory to play at least 1 own composition. The semi-final jury selects 3 bands and the public chooses 1 formation for the final.

3. FINAL

Each group provides a 30-minute presentation, in which at least 2 of their own compositions are included. A special final jury selects the “Best Group” and an “Audience Award” is also awarded.

4. PRICES PACK

In addition to recognition and useful experience, the finalists of the Dutch Jazz Competition also compete for an extensive prize package. The following prizes are offered in collaboration with various partners:

  • Cash Prize (“Audience Award Winners and Best Band Winner”) made available by Sena Muziekproductiefionds
  • Festival Tour in the summer according to the final (Winner Best Band)
  • Relevant performances (Winner Audience Award)

5. REGULATIONS/ CONDITIONS

The Dutch Jazz Competition is organized by the Dutch Jazz Competition Foundation (hereinafter referred to as “the Foundation”). By signing the registration form Dutch Jazz Competition, the entrant declares to fulfill the stated obligations and to adhere to the stated rules. Specific instructions regarding semi-finals and finals will be announced after the first selection. In order to guarantee the own identity of the participating bands, only groups with a unique line-up can register. An individual musician can therefore only be part of one registering group.

  • The competition is open to groups (soloists) of which at least half of the members reside in the Netherlands. In case of doubt, the opinion of the Foundation is binding.
  • Only groups that have the intention and possibility to present themselves ‘live’ during the remainder of the competition can compete.
  • The group/soloist registers for participation in the Dutch Jazz Competition event by sending the registration form Dutch Jazz Competition via the web form and via email (We Transfer) the 2 tracks, of which at least 1 own composition and in total no longer than 12 min (see point 4), a clear digital (landscape) photo of the group/soloist and a digital biography (no more than 1x A4) including the names of the group members and the composers of the submitted pieces.
  • The composer declares and guarantees that the submitted own composition does not infringe the copyright or other rights of third parties. The registration is not complete without 1 of these parts, and is not included in the demo selection. The occupation of the participating groups may not change in the process of registrations, semi-finals and finals.
  • The competition will consist of a selection round in which a committee (to be appointed by the Foundation) assesses the submitted material. The selections of the 6 semi-finalists will then be announced. A maximum of 4 groups from the semi-final (8 December TivoliVredenburg) will be selected for the final. The final will take place on December 17 in the Bimhuis Amsterdam. Selection for the semi-finals and final is also made by a jury to be appointed by the Foundation.
  • The Foundation advises participants to deposit their compositions with the Buma association.
  • A maximum of 4 weeks after the registration period has ended, the Foundation will announce which groups/soloists have been selected for the semi-finals. There will be no correspondence about the jury data as well as the decisions of the demo, semi-final and final juries.
  • The Foundation has the right to use the material sent by the group/soloist for publicity purposes. The Foundation can make recordings of the final that can be used for radio and/or television broadcasts and possibly appear on a sound and/or image carrier. The Foundation hereby acquires the non-exclusive right to use the name, artist name, logo, brand, portraits, images and/or biographical details of the group/act on inlay cards, covers or other packaging materials of any reproductions and on materials intended for promotional and publicity purposes related to the exploitation of any reproductions, both before the final and afterwards.

6. BACKGROUND

In 2000 the Dutch Jazz Competition started for the first time.

The Dutch Jazz Competition distinguishes itself from other jazz competitions in several ways:

  • The involvement of the ‘jazz field’. The Dutch Jazz Competition was founded at the request of players from the field, including musicians, cultural institutions, trade unions, broadcasters and stages.
  • The open enrollment formula, through which the DJC presents a wide variety of jazz and jazz cross-floods performed by budding professionals.
  • Upon selection, all participants will receive the fee standard (€270) per musician per performance. A maximum of 1620 euros (6 players) per band is available.
  • The attention of the national media if possible via the media partners Sublime FM/Dutch Jazz and NPO Radio 2 Soul & Jazz
  • The prizes awarded to the winners. The combination of a cash prize, tours, participation in prestigious events acts as a catalyst for the musical career of the winners.
  • Scouting. The pool of jazz(+) experts who are looking for distinctive talent as a scout for the DJC.
  • Continuity. The competition has been in existence since 2000.

7. MISSION AND MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE DJC

  • Stimulate the musical career of young, most talented Dutch jazz musicians, starting professionals.
  • To present a representative sample of the new Dutch jazz talent to the largest possible audience.
  • Promote entrepreneurship by, among other things, involving the participating groups in the promotion.
